Christmas Day falls on a Wednesday this year, with two further bank holidays impacting residential waste collections.
The festive bank holidays, scheduled on Wednesday, December 25, Thursday, December 26, and Wednesday, January 1, will mean changes to bin collections throughout the boroughs.
Local authorities have advised residents to check their bin collection days to ensure their rubbish gets taken away.
Here are the changes to the bin collection schedule made by Brent Council and Harrow Council over the holiday period.
Brent
In Brent, all rubbish, garden waste and recycling collections will be affected by the Christmas and New Year bank holidays. Over Christmas, bins will be picked up two days later than residents’ usual collection day, while over tje New Year it will be the following day.
Therefore, normal Wednesday collections (December 25) will be on Friday (December 27), Thursday collections (December 26) will be on Saturday (December 28), Friday’s (December 27) on Sunday (December 29).
In the New Year, Wednesday’s collection (January 1) will be on Thursday (January 2), Thursday’s (January 2) on Friday (January 3), and Friday’s (January 3) on Saturday (January 4).
There will also be no bulky waste or small items collection on bank holidays, with the Abbey Road Refuse and Recycling Centre also closed on December 25 and 26, as well as January 1.
Harrow
Harrow Council has confirmed that there will be no bin collections of any kind on any of the bank holidays. Residents have been advised that they may have to leave their bins out on two days to ensure that they are collected.
If your usual bin collection is on a Monday, this will go ahead as normal on December 23. However, if your bins are typically collected on a Tuesday, residents have been advised to leave their bins out on December 23 and December 24 (Christmas Eve) as they may be picked up on either day.
If Wednesday is your collection day, residents have been advised to leave their bins out on Tuesday 24 and Friday 27, if Thursday then on Friday 27 and Saturday 28, and if Friday then also on Saturday 28.
Over New Year bank holidays, residents are to leave their bins out the following day. Therefore, if it scheduled for Wednesday (January 1) the bins should be put out on Thursday (January 2), for Thursday leave them out on Friday (January 3), and for Friday on Saturday (January 4)
Residents can enter their postcode on the council website at www.harrow.gov.uk to find out exactly when the bins for their road will be collected. All Garden waste bin collections will pause for two weeks over the Christmas period.
