1990s legends to headline new East London festival with battery-powered set

Taking place in the Lido Field in Victoria Park, the June 6 gig will be the band’s first London festival show in more than nine years.

And in keeping with their drive to decarbonise live music events, their performance – in partnership with clean energy provider Ecotricity – will be 100% battery powered.

On the bill alongside them are 1990s French electronic duo Air, hip hop legends Yasiin Bey and The Alchemist, and south London singer songwriter Tirzah, with more acts to be announced.

Tickets go on sale on February 21 at www.lidofestival.co.uk.

Massive Attack’s live show has been designed in collaboration between founder member Robert Del Naja, United Visual Artists, and documentarist Adam Curtis, with their most recent setlist including huge hits Teardrop, Safe From Harm, and Unfinished Sympathy.

Last year, ACT 1.5 and Massive Attack staged their first large-scale green all-day festival in Bristol that aimed to change how music events are staged by reducing carbon emissions and air pollution.

In November, they applied their science-based approach to an indoor event in Liverpool’s M&S Bank Arena joined by IDLES and Nile Rodgers & Chic.

Speaking about LIDO Festival, Del Naja (3D) writes: “To present London’s first ever 100% battery powered festival day with a dynamic range of artists is an optimum outcome for us.

“History shows it’s often the combination of art and science that overcomes the greatest challenges we face, so it’s good to see LIDO take learnings from our ACT1.5 event last year and apply those technologies to where they see emissions coming from.

“Clean productions beginning this journey to normalisation is good news for everyone, but especially for music fans that come to festivals and the local communities that live around them.”

The green gig fits with the LIDO festival ethos which aims to bring together music, community and activism.

Jim King, CEO of European Festivals and AEG Presents, said: “Big changes require both courage and determination, and I cannot speak highly enough of Massive Attack and their team for embracing the challenge of launching this important initiative.

“AEG was fortunate to collaborate with Massive Attack on the ACT 1.5 event in Bristol last summer, which set the standard and inspired our team to continue at LIDO. Massive Attack has demonstrated that there is a better way to operate for the future of both our planet and our industry.

“LIDO represents the next step towards a broader adoption of sustainability principles across AEG European Festivals, while continuing to bring the world’s biggest artists to deliver incredible experiences for fans.”

Massive Attack join previously announced headliners Jamie xx (Saturday 7 June), OUTBREAK Fest (Friday 13 June), Charli xcx’s own party girl festival (Saturday 14 June) and London Grammar (Sunday 15 June).

The 10-day festival hands control to headliners and asks them to programme a one day line up of their favourite artists, collaborators, and newly tipped artists, alongside artwork and stage design.

Sustainable aspects of the festival include using renewable fuels, reducing waste with packaged only products, removing cups on site, banning single use plastics, and donating unwanted food to local communities.
